Job Summary:
Assist Greenhouse Manager in the overall operation of the greenhouse with primary responsibility for food safety, quality and defense programs. Also provides training, supervision and supports to staff and program participants working at the greenhouse.
Essential Job Functions:
General Record Keeping
Water Chemistry Sampling and Analysis
Fertilizer Preparation and Application
Environmental Control System Operation and Management
Monitoring Operating Status of Mechanical Greenhouse Systems i.e. heating, cooling, lighting and shading equipment
Develop, implement and oversee food safety and quality programs
Availability to be “on-call” for alarm monitoring and possible emergency service
Follow and improve upon a working IPM program
Routine Scouting for greenhouse pests and possible plant nutrition problems etc.
Monitor and support beneficial insect production
Apply beneficial insects or approved pesticides to the crop if necessary
Handle sales calls, invoice preparation and product distribution on occasion
Research and develop improved production methods for new and existing crops
Provides supervision/oversight for receiving and pick-up of deliveries, contractors and visitors
Act on behalf of the Greenhouse Manager in his/her absence
Miscellaneous duties as required.
Education/Experience Required:
Bachelors degree in horticulture or technology, food service distribution or equivalent experience and greenhouse experience.
Competency Required:
Strong leadership, teamwork and communication skills, valid driver’s license that meets third party insurance, reliable transportation, ability to lift 50 lbs, willingness to work some weekends and holidays. Pesticide applicators license or ability to obtain one within 90 days.
