Greenhouse Support Team Member (multiple locations in NYC and NJ) Part Time

NY Sun Works is a non profit organization that promotes sustainability through science education. The organization’s current focus is The Greenhouse Project, an initiative that builds 21st century hydroponic science labs in urban schools. These spacious facilities packed with hands-on equipment invite students to study ecological science, natural resources, and human productivity through the lens of hydroponic urban farming. With over 250 labs up and running and many new sites being built in 2023, we are looking to expand our team to ensure a successful growth.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Training will be provided with the goal of self sufficiency. Maintenance of existing labs entails:

• Water quality testing, plant/fish care,
• Hydroponic systems troubleshooting and overall lab cleaning and organizing
• Building new labs involves organizing layout and assembly of all lab equipment
• Training teachers and other school staff on hydroponic lab procedures and growing techniques.
• The job requires strong mechanical and customer service skills. If your friends call you to put together Ikea furniture and you enjoy it, this might be a good fit for you!

The Team Member is a part-time position, spent primarily on-site in hydroponic classrooms at NY Sun Works K-12 partner schools throughout the five boroughs of New York City and New Jersey.

Salary range is $20-22 per hour, with potential for growth within the organization.

Candidates should be passionate about the NY Sun Works mission and deeply committed to science, sustainability, and education in the urban environment.

An ideal candidate has a track record that includes:

• Strong mechanical skills
• Able to carry 40 lbs.
• Exceptional organizational skills
• Exceptional communication skills
• Experience working as part of a team
• Comfortable teaching others
• Comfortable working in a constantly changing environment
• Knowledge of Hydroponics and Aquaponics a plus
• Non-profit experience a plus
• (Vehicle) Driver’s license a (big) plus but not necessary

IMPORTANT:

As this position requires employees to be working in New York City public schools, COVID-19 vaccination is required.
During the training period, employees can expect to travel to all 5 boroughs as part of their training experience. After the training period, employees can expect to work in their preferred borough. PLEASE indicate which borough you prefer to work in on your application.

Job Types: Part-time, Contract

Salary: $20.00 – $22.00 per hour
